Toilet training: How to help your toddler relieve themselves independently!

Zindelijkheid: Zo help jij je peuter zelfstandig te ontlasten!

Hey Twinky Family!

Welcome back to a new blog post full of useful tips and tricks for raising our little toddlers. Today, we dive into the adventurous world of Toilet Training for toddlers. Yes, you read that right! We’re going to talk about how to help those adorable little beings take the big step towards using the toilet independently.

Toilet training is not just a challenge for babies. About 15% of 5-year-olds experience bedwetting. Among 4-7-year-olds, about 7% experience daytime wetting, according to the Dutch Youth Health Center. Many children do it unconsciously, but a large number want to master toilet training and don’t know how to do it independently. In this blog, we share some tips to help your baby become a self-sufficient pee and poop expert!

  1. Choose the perfect potty for your toddler

Ah, the potty – the little throne for our little princes and princesses in training! When choosing the right potty for your toddler, keep a few things in mind. First, make sure the potty is comfortable and stable. You don’t want your little one to feel uncomfortable as they start their big adventure. Second, consider the size and height of the potty. Toddlers are still small, so a potty low enough for them to easily sit down and get up from is a must. And finally, choose a potty with a fun color or design that appeals to your toddler. A little visual stimulation can work wonders!

According to NIBUD, diapers are expected to cost 50 euros per month. The Twinky Potty is the ideal and affordable solution to guide your child. For just 34.95, you can get started with it!

  1. Get to know the potty and the toilet trainer

Okay, let’s be honest – the idea of the potty can be a bit intimidating for our little ones at first. But don’t panic! That’s where the potty and the toilet trainer come in. The potty is perfect for the first steps of toilet training. It’s portable, easy to clean, and can be placed anywhere in the house. Get your toddler used to the idea of the potty by having them sit on it regularly, especially after meals or naps.

Once your little one is more familiar with the idea of the potty, it’s time to switch to the toilet trainer. This handy device fits on a regular toilet seat and helps your toddler transition from the potty to the big toilet. Let your little one get used to using the toilet trainer by practicing sitting and standing. It may take some time, but with patience and encouragement, they’ll master it quickly!

  1. Make the potty fun and appealing

Last but not least, make the potty fun and appealing for your toddler! Decorate it with stickers of their favorite characters, give them a special reward every time they succeed, or turn it into a game. The most important thing is to create positive associations with the potty so your toddler stays motivated to practice and learn.

So there you have it, three handy tips to toilet train your toddler. Remember that every little sprout has their own pace, so be patient and stay positive. Before you know it, they’ll be using the toilet like a pro, just like a big boy or girl!

The NJI, the Dutch Youth Institute, offers several other important tips besides getting a potty. We have summarized the most important ones for you:

  • Give your child compliments for every step: when they indicate they need to pee, when they have sat on the potty, and when they pee or poop on the potty. For example, say: 'You felt that you needed to pee and told me. How great!'
  • Start practicing during a calm period, not right before exciting (holiday) days.
  • Make sure you have enough time and attention to devote to toilet training. It happens in small steps. Always stay positive during practice.
